Who Will Reignite The Dragon? Remembering The 2019 F1 Chinese GP

That’s right, Formula 1 is officially going back to China after a four-year hiatus. Four years on, F1’s landscape has shifted drastically. Sprint Races have arrived and Mercedes’ dominance has faded, making way for the Red Bull era. As the grid lines up once again in China, let’s rewind the clock and revisit the action from the 2019 Chinese Grand Prix.

Fun Facts:
The 2024 Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix will be on Sunday, April 21st at 3 am EST.

The 2019 Formula 1 Grand Prix marked the 1000th Formula 1 Race.

The Drivers

The 2019 grid looks quite a bit different from the 2024 grid, so we’ll start our trip down memory lane by taking a look at the grid. Notably, Pierre Gasly was still a Red Bull driver, serving as Max Verstappen’s teammate. Gasly had the fastest lap for the 2019 Chinese Grand Prix, but only mustered a 6th place finish.

Besides that, there are a few drivers who aren’t in F1 anymore. For starters, there’s Sebastian Vettel, who finished third in his Ferrari. In front of Vettel was the Mercedes duo, with Lewis Hamilton taking the win and Valtteri Bottas finishing six seconds behind him. Other notable mentions include Kimi Räikkönen (Alfa Romeo), Romain Grosjean (Haas), Antonio Giovinazzi (Alfa Romeo), Robert Kubica (Williams), and Daniil Kvyat (Toro Rosso).

Lando Norris, Daniil Kvyat, Nico Hulkenberg DNF

There were three DNFs (Did Not Finish) for the 2019 Chinese Grand Prix: Lando Norris, Daniil Kvyat, and Nico Hülkenberg. Hülkenberg was the first of the three retirements due to a mechanical failure on lap 17. As for Norris and Kvyat, the pair had a crash on the first lap- and though they raced through the majority of the race, both retired just after the 50th lap of the race due to the damages from that first lap incident.
