Mazda recently announced a refresh for the 2024 Mazda MX-5 at the Japanese Mobility Show, and for the first time since 2015, the MX-5 is receiving an exterior design change. Of course, there are many other updates and upgrades Mazda has given the MX-5, so let’s dig right into the changes.
Obviously, the significant change here is the updated design- albeit not a big one. The exterior refresh consists of new LED headlights and updated LED tail lights, giving the MX-5 a modern edge to it.
However, a lot of the changes come in the interior of the MX-5. For 2024, Mazda introduced a new 8.8-inch touchscreen (a much-welcomed update compared to the prior not-so-responsive 7-inch system) while also updating all USB ports from Type-A to Type-C USB ports.
Additional changes include an updated gauge cluster and a new, frameless rear-view mirror.
Performance-wise, Mazda added a new Dynamic Stability Control track mode that gives drivers more leeway before the computers intervene. Mazda also updated the limited-slip differential to an Asymmetric Limited Slip Diff, which Mazda says will improve the cornering of the MX-5. Both the power steering and throttle response were updated to provide a more “natural” driving feel.
In the safety department, Mazda introduced Lane-Keep Assist and Intelligent Speed Assistance while updating the Traffic Sign Recognition software to improve sign recognition.
While all of these updates are specifically for the Japanese-spec MX-5, it is expected that the North American-spec MX-5 will receive the same updates.
